According to his official website Berkeley Breathed's next two Opus comics will be censored from a large number of newspapers nationwide, presumably because they are "offensive" to Muslims.
While newspapers do, of course, have a right to choose what they print, I don't have to approve of their choices, and in this case I don't approve. I haven't yet seen the strips, but what harm can can a damn penguin do?
The strips will appear on Salon.com on August 26th and September 2nd; I'll be posting direct links on these dates. I urge all my readers to help embarrass these lame-ass cowardly newspapers: denounce their censorship (especially if your own newspaper censors them), publicize the issue, and read the strips.

Please pick a handle or moniker for your comment. It's much easier to address someone by a name or pseudonym than simply "hey you". I have the option of requiring a "hard" identity, but I don't want to turn that on... yet.

Hmm... I can't log on to Berkeley Breathed's webpage. However, interested readers can further inflame their ire at weak-willed editors and publishers by picking up the June, 2006 issue of Harper's and reading Art Spiegelman's piece on the infamous "Mohammed cartoons," as well as view the cartoons themselves.

ReplyDeleteI've been following Berke Breathed's career for decades (well, a long time). The probability that we would say something I personally would approve of censoring is vanishingly small.
ReplyDeleteI'll have a look at the first cartoon tomorrow; if I'm wrong, I'm wrong, and I'm man enough to say so. But I think I'll be right.
