Ali Eteraz

The Pakistani Heretical Girl gives "moderate" muslim Ali Eteraz the business.

Money quote: Eteraz' "denial of Islam’s own part in the making of Muslim male mysogony and his blaming of local ‘culture’ rather than Islam sinks any claim to be a true reformer."

  2. Excuse if I'm far less easily impressed: Certainly Eteraz implies problem with interpretation of Islam if he points out different interpretations of foundational texts and previous thinkers for a more progressive practice of Islam. What then makes a reformer? Someone who renounces the religion completely? A Hirsi Ali? She's never going to reform anything, but men like Eteraz have far greater opportunity and currency to do so.

  3. First, PHG roasts Eteraz mostly for being a sexist asshole, which he is.

Even so, how can you possibly reform Islamic misogyny? What's left to reform if you deny that misogyny is a problem within Islam?

Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

Furthermore, Islam is not capable of reform. Moral reform requires at minimum rational, critical thought, and rational, critical thought is completely inimicable to religion. Ali Eteraz has no more chance of "reforming" Islam than I do.

  4. Eteraz is the last person to deny misogyny is a problem within Muslim communities, he regularly blogs about it.

Islam is not capable of reform? Clearly you are completely oblivious to 1400 years of changes, in which critical and religious thought were used to great extent to reinterpret religious texts and past action in modernity. Do you mean to imply that there are no muslims who can be both muslim and critically analyze their faith? Because if you do, then of course you're not going to see a chance of "reforming" Islam.

Are you only two weeks into your ESL class? Or are you simply too stupid to read and understand simple declarative sentences in the English language?

  6. Note: I'm well aware that there are people out there who think Ali Eteraz is all that and a bag of chips. But opinions are like assholes: everybody has one, and they usually stink.

This isn't the place to simply register your opinion. If you have actual evidence that Eteraz is such a great guy, you're welcome to post it and we'll discuss it. But I'm not interested if all you have to say is that you love Eteraz, and you want to have his babies.

Yes, I mean precisely that. "Faith" by definition is that which is not susceptible to critical analysis, "The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." How do you "analyze" that which is explicitly placed beyond the bounds of rational analysis?

"The discussion comes full circle then: every time a woman dies at the hand of a man, especially a man invoking God, it should be considered not just a form of evil, but an attack on the ability of God to be deemed divine. Only a rebuke that severe will prevent the so called Defenders of God from killing the Children of Man."

  9. "'Faith' by definition is that which is not susceptible to critical analysis"

And clearly, Mr. Barefoot Bum has pretty strong "faith" in the certainty of his own opinion/knowledge...

    ...so please, nobody question him!
