First: their chosen designation: “atheist”. The term atheism originated from the Greek ἄθεος (atheos), meaning "without god"... If there is no God, then why include the idea of him in their name? ...
Second: If they don’t believe in God, why do they spend so much effort, time, money and breath denying His existence? ...
Third: If atheists believe in medicine and science (and only medicine and science) why do they not consider that belief in God? ...
Fourth: Science – besides medical science -- is constantly making new discoveries, finding the answers to new questions... Those [newly discovered] rules didn’t just pop into existence out of nothing. Did they “evolve” or were they pre-programmed by an intelligent designer who knew how things work?
Fifth: ... [A]ll this randomness evolved into homo sapiens, humans as we know them. Just as Darwin described, atheists believe it to have been. ... [I]f any sort of evolution did occur, who is to say that God did not make that happen as well?
[T]he superstition that the budget must be balanced at all times, once it is debunked, takes away one of the bulwarks that every society must have against expenditure out of control. . . . [O]ne of the functions of old-fashioned religion was to scare people by sometimes what might be regarded as myths into behaving in a way that long-run civilized life requires.

Please pick a handle or moniker for your comment. It's much easier to address someone by a name or pseudonym than simply "hey you". I have the option of requiring a "hard" identity, but I don't want to turn that on... yet.
With few exceptions, I will not respond or reply to anonymous comments, and I may delete them. I keep a copy of all comments; if you want the text of your comment to repost with something vaguely resembling an identity, email me.
No spam, pr0n, commercial advertising, insanity, lies, repetition or off-topic comments. Creationists, Global Warming deniers, anti-vaxers, Randians, and Libertarians are automatically presumed to be idiots; Christians and Muslims might get the benefit of the doubt, if I'm in a good mood.
See the Debate Flowchart for some basic rules.
Sourced factual corrections are always published and acknowledged.
I will respond or not respond to comments as the mood takes me. See my latest comment policy for details. I am not a pseudonomous-American: my real name is Larry.
Comments may be moderated from time to time. When I do moderate comments, anonymous comments are far more likely to be rejected.
I've already answered some typical comments.
I have jqMath enabled for the blog. If you have a dollar sign (\$) in your comment, put a \\ in front of it: \\\$, unless you want to include a formula in your comment.

Look up Fair Use.

No.
Let's give this a whirl here.
ReplyDelete1. "If there is no God, then why include the idea of him in their name?"
So people would know what the prefix "a" was referring to. Doctors sometimes say that a patient is "asymptomatic" so that others will know that the patient does not have "symptoms." If they just said "a" that would be pretty confusing.
2. "If they don’t believe in God, why do they spend so much effort, time, money and breath denying His existence?"
For kicks. Also, because the people that do believe in such magical beings have tremendous political and culture power, and we have an interest in standing up for our rights when they are threatened by such people and their delusions.
3. "If atheists believe in medicine and science (and only medicine and science) why do they not consider that belief in God?"
Because medicine and science are not alleged to be omnipotent, omniscient, and supernatural as gods are often alleged to be. They are not the same thing.
4. "Science – besides medical science -- is constantly making new discoveries, finding the answers to new questions... Those [newly discovered] rules didn’t just pop into existence out of nothing. Did they “evolve” or were they pre-programmed by an intelligent designer who knew how things work?"
Neither. They are physical properties of the universe we inhabit, and the entire universe was not constructed for the benefit of the residents of the planet Earth. It did not "evolve" either because evolution via natural selection is a process that works on biological organisms, not physical constants (although the term "evolve" does get used rather casually in cosmological discussions still. Just keep the context in mind to avoid confusion.)
5. "[A]ll this randomness evolved into homo sapiens, humans as we know them. Just as Darwin described, atheists believe it to have been. ... [I]f any sort of evolution did occur, who is to say that God did not make that happen as well?"
If you have evidence for that hypothesis, you are welcome to present it. Otherwise, it will be discounted on account of parsimony, at least, similarly to how we discount the possibility that we are all being mind-controlled by aliens on the planet Zuptor in the Andromeda galaxy. Maybe we are, but it does not add any useful information to our collective knowledge unless we have evidence that we indeed are.
Cheers,
Brian

OR- WHY ATEHSIM IS MORE HARD TO PUSH THAN MOST PEOPLE THINK
Let us now look to how i first figured all this stuff out. If u all read me theory below- huh, ure going to be somewhat amazed actually.
First, the famed tale of Mr. John Connor and his mum, this is Sara Connor. Once again- we have judgement day, we have a fire or apokalypitca, we have a woman divinely almost made with a little baby (by time traveller Reece)- and we have Sara who sees the fire and must to protect her son- who will grow to save humanity, his destiny.
John Connor = Jesus Christ = Huh- JC (no less)
Sara Connor = Maryam
Terminator = Fallen angel
Sky Net = Devil
Judgement Day= speaks for itself
Like intelligent design and stuff, i mean, what about the autobotz from Transformers movie?
Did they just like make themselves? No way.
As we know, they had the "All Spark," which was in like a magic box (like the Kaaba). The all spark in transformers 1 movie- this is what created Optimus Prime etc. Like we all know, there is also evil created also, this is the "Deceptercons"- led by Megatron. In Transformers 2 movie, we see the same stuff- this is "The fallen," this is autobotz who will not protect humans and rebel against the all spark. So it is like this:
All Spark = God
Deceptercons = devils
Megatron= Shaitan
Autobotz= Angels
Good now more people will read it. I win. ;-)
ReplyDeleteGood now more people will read it.
ReplyDelete'twas ever my intention.
Why do global warming deniers spend so much time/money/effort denying it's existence if they don't believe in it?
ReplyDeleteSpeaking only for myself, I rarely click through and read the entire egregiously stupid article. It's usually clear how stupid the author is from just the quoted portion, and I don't see the need to torture myself.
